The Rev. Paul f. Heykes studied art at the University of Wisconsin - LaCrosse in the early 1970's, graduating with a B.S in Art Education in 1974. After several years of teaching, and a brief stint in the carbonics industry, Heykes began serving as a youth and education director at a church in Appleton, WI. He then returned to study theology at Wartburg Theological Seminary where he completed his Masters of Divinity degree in December of 1986. In 1987 he was ordained and called to serve as pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church of Morgan, WI (ELCA) where he is now in his 22nd year of ministry.

For more than a quarter-century, though his primary vocation has been ministry, Heykes has always kept at least one foot firmly planted in the world of the visual arts. In the mid to late 1970's he produced over a dozen short subject motion pictures. During the same era several of his paintings were selected for display in the Wisconsin Artist's Gallery at the Milwaukee Art Center. And one of his larger canvases is in the permanent collection of Thrivent Financial in Appleton. During his ministry Heykes has applied his skills in art, design and photography to a large number of church projects and publications. From 1997 to 2005 he wrote for and edited the layouts of the East Central Synod pages in The Lutheran. After his trips to India in 1997, Africa in 2001 and Nicaragua in 2004, Heykes published a dozen photo essays documenting the relief work of Lutheran World Relief (LWR) and its partners in these regions. On the trip to Nicaragua he also produced a real time trip diary (blog) for LWR, posting stories and photos remotely from Managua, Matagalpa and where ever he could find an internte cafe. Several of his photos have been used in LWR publicity and publications.

A few years ago Heykes decided it was time to retire the old 35mm equipment and go digital, and in so doing, he has focused most all of his current artistic efforts on photography. The bulk of his work over the last two years has been sports photography. He specializes in swimming and diving (because it just so happens that another one of Heykes' passions is the sport of springboard diving and he has been the diving coach and assistant swimming coach at Pulaski High School for the last 10 years). He has worked as a contract photographer for a local studio shooting little league baseball tournament games. He recently acquired studio lights and is now working on adding portrait photography to his repertoire.

Most of the time Heykes only photographs the events and people that he chooses to. However, he will occasionally book special events or portrait sittings. Contact him in person or via email (link at the top of the page) to discuss your needs.
